The Ark Foundation addresses a wide range of technological topics. As scientific research advances, it also explores more unusual issues, such as those related to… intimate hygiene. Nearly 75% of women are affected by vaginal infections at least once in their lives. These infections are caused by a fungus called “Candida albicans.” The treatments currently available on the market do not produce satisfactory results.
Project Scope
Since the late 1990s, the Institute of Life Sciences at HES-SO Valais has been working on the development of plant extracts capable of combating and treating these infections. Initial basic research has identified the antifungal properties of certain alpine plants.
Through its Accelerator program, The Ark Foundation closely monitors the work of HES-SO Valais. In late 2010, recognizing the potential economic opportunities, The Ark took the initiative. It approached Novipart, a company seeking to develop a line of products for women’s health. The connection with HES-SO Valais was quickly established.
Under the leadership of The Ark, two projects were launched:
- The first step was to conduct a technical feasibility study to identify ingredients capable of treating vaginal yeast infections. It was successfully completed in 2011.
- The second phase, which is still ongoing, involves preparing for the product’s commercialization, including toxicological testing and the production of a pilot-scale batch.
Mediplant, the agronomic development partner, has already established pilot crops of the active plants to ensure the supply and quality of the raw material.
Tangible results
The startup Pharmalp SA, which has since been founded by Novipart, is closely monitoring and supporting the research. It hopes to add a solution for the prevention and treatment of fungal infections to its line of scientifically validated natural products. This initiative benefits not only women but also the Valais economy and its diversification.
